The last day of a festival is always bittersweet, but fans came to the fairgrounds early to take in as much of Cali Roots as they could. Day three began as festival goers trickled in just as New Kingston wrapped up their sound check. Walking through the gates of the fairgrounds with this live music already playing earlier than usual proved an uplifting and exciting experience to the festival. Starting the day with New Kingston set a positive tone for the rest of the day.
Australian native, New Zealand-bred soulful reggae star Sammy Johnson will bring his silky reggae soul music back to the United States this winter as special guest in support of the Green’s Marching Orders Tour. Sammy Johnson collides his Polynesian roots with his love for modern jazz and R&B artists like D’Angelo, Amy Winehouse, and Lauryn Hill, which results in a passionate musical hybrid that is undeniably soothing. He will be on tour alongside Hawaiian-based reggae band The Green.
The new album has 14 songs and full of collaborations, including multiple songs co-written and produced with Brian Fennell (Ryan Tedder, One Republic, The Fray, Third Eye Blind), as well as guest appearances by Grammy-nominees J Boog and Eric Rachmany (Rebelution), Jamaican dancehall superstar Busy Signal, and island music veterans Fiji and The Mana’o Company. Also, the new album features the band’s first female vocalist as the main harmony, Riya Davis, you can hear her harmonies on the tracks “Foolish Love” and “You’ve Been Crying."
Reggae fans have reason to get excited. It’s been four years since The Green released Hawai’i ’13, which further cemented the band’s reputation as one of the best in the genre and won the group an unprecedented three Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards in its home state of Hawaii. The Green have now released the second single and title track off of the new album “Marching Orders,” out now on all major digital outlets (stream here).
